FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHICH CURRENCY IS USED IN PERU?  
The national currency is Peruvian Soles (PEN). However, you are often able to use American Dollars in major tourist attractions and for gratuities. Money exchange offices are readily available in all major cities to exchange any kind of currency.

WHAT IS THE LANGUAGE SPOKEN IN PERU?
The primary language are. The indigenous language of Quechua and is spoken in rural areas and the main language is. Spanish spoken all over the country. English is spoken in all tourist areas.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BOOK A TOUR? 
For the Inca Trail you most booked at least 7 months in advance to get the permit. For other tours, ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU recommends you book one month in advance, however, depending on availability, we can accommodate a booking two weeks in advance.

WHAT TYPE OF DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED?
ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU requires your passport number in order to purchase trek permits in advance. You will need to travel with your original passport while in Peru, make sure to bring the same passport you’ll give us the number to book the tour otherwise contact to us as earliest as possible, we recommend you also bring a valid or to purchase an medical travel insurance, as well as yellow fiver vaccination card.

CAN I OBTAIN A DISCOUNT IF I HAVE A STUDENT CARD?
Yes, but for the Inca Trail only. ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU provides a USD $20 discount for those with a valid ISIC (International Student Identity Card). To obtain this discount, please advise us at the time of booking and provide us with a photocopy of your student card

HOW DOSE THE PAYMENT WORK FOR THE TOURS?

CAN I USE A CREDIT CARD TO PAY FOR MY TOUR?  
Many businesses in Cusco, including ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU, do not accept credit cards as form of payment. Credit card companies such as Visa and MasterCard typically charge an additional rate of up to 7% on top of the purchase price, and charge a large annual fee for businesses in Peru. These additional fees make it very challenging for local businesses to sustain themselves. For this reason, ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU asks its clients to use Western Union or created PAYPAL account to make payments for the tours.

WHAT IF I HAVE A PRE-EXISTING MEDICAL CONDITION?  
Please advise ROLO’S TARVEL PERU at the time of booking of any pre-existing medical condition(s) such as asthma, diabetes or any other condition that could affect your ability to do a tour or trek. This will assist us to better plan for the trip and ensure you have the best possible experience, ensure your medical travel insurance prior to your tour or trek.

WHAT IS THE MOST APPROPIATE TYPE OF LUGGAGE TO BRING? 
ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU recommends that if you are trekking, it´s most appropriate to bring a backpack. In any event, we will provided you with a duffel bag for all treks. For traditional tours, a backpack, duffel bag or suitcase is adequate. Keep in mind that there are dirt and cobblestone roads in some areas.

WHAT IS THE MOST APPROPIATE TYPE OF CLOTHING TO BRING? 
ROLO’S TARVEL PERU recommends that you bring many layers to best accommodate to the wide range of temperatures. During the day if the sun is out, it can be quite hot; on the contrary, early mornings and nighttime can be cold. Trousers that zip off at knee level, t-shirts, long-sleeved shirts, fleece and windbreaker / rain jacket are ideal. In addition, be mindful of whether you are traveling in the dry or wet season.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE IS IT RECOMMENDED TO ARRIVE IN CUSCO PRIOR TO THE START OF A TOUR?
ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU recommends you arrive in Cusco or some other places with the same elevation 2-3 days in advance in order to adequately acclimatize to the altitude. Cusco is situated at 3,400 meters (11,300 feet) above sea level.

IN WHAT TYPE OF PHYSICAL CONDITION DO I NEED TO BE?
If you are of moderate fitness you should not have any major problems. If not, it may be to your advantage to do some walking up hills prior to traveling to Peru. ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU’S guides are mindful of each participant´s pace and encourage you to go at a pace most comfortable to you. ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU motto is slow and steady, as this will allow you to fully enjoy every step of your experience!

HOW DO I MANAGE ALTITUDE SICKNESS?
We recommend you stay 2 or 3 days prior to your tour begins in an elevation over 2800mt or 9200fts, and drink plenty of water to allowed you proper oxygen flow as well recommend you some green leaves (coca) tea and don not be worried. 

IS THERE A BRIEFING BEFORE THE START OF THE TOUR?
Yes. Typically, a welcoming meeting takes a place in the hotel lobby according the trip note and the trek briefing takes place a day prior to your tour departure at which time you will meet your guide and be provided with a detailed overview of your tour. However, ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU can accommodate to your travel schedule and arrange a time that bests suits you.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO RENT EQUIPMENT? 
Yes. You can rent sleeping bags and trekking poles from ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU, if necessary.

IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE TREKKING POLES? 
ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU highly recommends using trekking poles as they assist in climbing uphill and provide more stability while descending. However, if you are used to hiking without poles, the decision is up to you.

IF I AM TRAVELLING ALONE, IS IT POSSIBLE TO HAVE MY OWN TENT OR ACCOMMODATIO? 
Yes. It will cost an additional payment to have your own single supplement for more information contact us while you making you’re booking for the trip.

HOW MANY PEOPLE WILL BE IN THE GROUP?
ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU group sizes are typically comprised of 4-12 people. We do, however, arrange tours for larger groups as well.

DO THE GUIDES SPEAK ENGLISH? 
Yes, all ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU tour leaders and guides are fluent English speaking. They also speak Quechua and Spanish.

WHAT TYPE OF FOOD IS SERVED?
During the treks, ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU provides you with typical Peruvian food using locally grown produce. The meal plan is well constructed, taking into account how your body digests food at different elevations. While on traditional tours, we will bring you to modern restaurants serving Peruvian gastronomy.
ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU is able to accommodate to your dietary needs, whether you are a vegetarian, or have specific allergies or require gluten-free food. Please advise us of your dietary specifications at the time of booking your tour.

WILL I BE PROVIDED WHIT WATER, OR DO I NEED TO BRING MY OWN?  
ROLO’S TRAVEL PERU will provide you with drinking water during all treks, but not in the hotels, we recommend you bring your own reusable water bottle and your tour leader may suggest a kitty for the water to purchase big containers of water to refill at any time.

WHAT IS THE PROTOCOL ON GRATUITIES?  
Gratuities are not compulsory and are at your discretion. They are something extra to give to the staff and are completely dependent on the experience you have during your tour. The suggested tipping guideline amount the whole staff is.

  • Tour Leader and Guides USD $8-12 from each group member per day
  • Cooks USD $5-8 from each group member per day 
  • Porter’s 70-90 soles from the whole group for each porter 
  • Drivers USD $2-3 from each group member per day
